FULTON, NY – Thanks to a recent grant from Meals on Wheels Association of America and the Charitable Foundation of the Energy Bar Association, Oswego County Opportunities Nutrition Services is beginning to go “green.”
The grant was towards the purchase of a “green” vehicle to help make the program’s Home Delivered Meal service more cost efficient.
According to OCO Nutrition Services Director Amy Roland, the new hybrid model Toyota Prius is a welcome addition to the fleet of vehicles the program uses to deliver meals to homebound seniors throughout Oswego County.
“This grant was a pleasant surprise,” said Roland. “We deliver approximately 1,000 meals each day. Program participants receive two nutritionally balanced meals a day, five days a week. Just as important are the friendly visits and safety checks that are a result of our drivers delivering the meals. With an EPA estimated 51/48-mpg city/highway acquiring the new Toyota Prius will allow us to deliver meals at a more cost effective rate. While going “green” is good for our environment, it’s also a benefit to our program and the seniors we serve!”
OCO’s home Delivered Meal service is funded in part through Oswego County Office for the Aging and United Way of Greater Oswego County.
Additionally OCO’s Nutrition Services administers eight Dining and Activity Centers where seniors can enjoy a hot, nutritious noontime meal and visit with friends. These centers are located in Fulton, Sandy Creek, Oswego, Mexico, Hannibal, Parish, Phoenix and Constantia.
