OCO to Host Community Food and Resources Giveaway on December 18

OCO Nutrition Services staff Sarah and Tammy load up the OCO van with boxes of food for people in Oswego County. On Thursday, December 18th Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) will host a Community Food and Resources Giveaway from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Fulton War Memorial, 609 West Broadway in Fulton. The event is open to the public and anyone who needs help with food or basic items is welcome to attend.

Oswego County, NY — Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) is working hard to help people who are struggling to afford food. Recently, OCO staff helped deliver 598 shelf-stable meal packets to 344 households in our community. These meals were given to families who shared that they were having a hard time keeping food in the house.

This special project was supported by Oswego County Federal Credit Union and JA FoodService. Thanks to them and OCO staff members across three locations, every meal was picked up or delivered in just a few hours.

One Fulton mom of seven kids told OCO how much the meals meant to her family:

“During the holidays, as a mom handling a big family, and being the only one preparing the big dinner, the meals helped so much to keep the kids quickly fed and learn some independence on feeding themselves with easy food. It also helped in a time where food is hard to keep in the house with only one income. We are so grateful…”

On Thursday, December 18th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Fulton War Memorial, 609 West Broadway in Fulton OCO will host a Community Food and Resources Giveaway to help even more people this month. The event is open to the public and anyone who needs help with food or basic items is welcome to attend.

Check-in begins at 1:00 p.m. to receive a food box ticket; Food box distribution begins at 2:00 p.m.

While supplies last people can receive:

  • A free food box
  • Toilet paper
  • A can opener
  • Information about local services that can help

Boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, one box per household, while supplies last. Each food box includes easy-to-prepare items such as pasta, sauce, juice, cereal, Bisquick, cheese, meats, and shelf-stable milk to help stretch the family food budget. Some items need to be kept cold, so they should be refrigerated right away. No income paperwork is required, but OCO may ask a few quick questions about household size to support future planning.

“As prices continue to rise, more people need a little help. We are glad to partner with others to support our neighbors,” said OCO Executive Director Diane Cooper-Currier.

OCO is a Community Action Agency that works to reduce poverty and help people build strong, stable lives here in Oswego County.
