OSWEGO, NY – Oswego High School senior Emily Rumrill, daughter of Michael and Dorothy Rumrill, has been selected as one of the “OHS Musicians of the Month for March.”
Music teacher Scott Ciesla said, “Emily is currently the principal oboist in the OHS Wind Ensemble. She also plays tenor saxophone in the Jazz Ensemble, and has performed in the OHS Symphony Orchestra.”
She started in the band program as a flute player and switched to oboe during her sophomore year.
She has gone above and beyond the basic requirements of the music program and has auditioned and been accepted into the OCMEA All-County Band and Orchestra each of the last two years.
Earlier this month, Emily won an All-Star Award on tenor saxophone at the Oneida Jazz Festival.
She has also participated in two OHS Drama Club plays (Phantom Toll Booth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
In addition to performing with the Oswego High School Ensembles and All-County Ensembles, Emily has taken private piano lessons with Marcia Sideris for the last 11 years.
Emily has really taken advantage of the many programs offered at OHS.
She is not only involved in extracurricular activities, but has worked hard academically and is a highest honor student.
She has received several academic honors in recent years.
In 2008, she received the “United States Achievement Award.” In 2009, she was nominated for the “People to People Student Ambassador Program” and the “National Young Leaders Conference.”
This past year, she was nominated for membership into for the “National Society of High School Scholars,” earned NYS Public High School Scholarship Athletic status and has received a certificate for the “American College of Musicians.”
She has also received a certificate from Oswego Mayor Randy Bateman for her contribution to the Oswego Spring Board Mural Project.
Ciesla said, “Emily is quite active outside of the school day as well. There isn’t a time in the day where she is not reading a book of some sort. She is always reading and trying to expand her horizons.”
She currently holds two part-time jobs and in her spare time Emily has earned a green belt in karate, played on the varsity and jayvee tennis teams and is a member of the Poetry Club, Chess Club and the Art Club.
As a member of the Art Club, she helped paint several of the murals that are currently displayed in the OHS hallways. She also enjoys cooking and spends much of her free time making jewelry.
Emily has been accepted into SUNY Oswego this fall to major in Spanish and minor in German to become a translator.
