OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School Chamber Singers, under the direction of Veronica Shaver, will be traveling to Annapolis, Maryland, April 7-10 to participate in the Heritage Music Festival.
Shaver said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for these singers that will provide them with not only an outstanding music experience, but a rich historic and cultural experience as well.”
While in Annapolis, the OHS Chamber Singers will perform and compete with other high school choirs from across the country.
They will visit the National Aquarium and Inner Harbor in Baltimore, tour historic Annapolis and the United States Naval Academy, perform in the Naval Academy Chapel, attend a demonstration of the Chapel organ given by one of America’s premiere concert organists, Monte Maxwell who holds an Artist Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and a Master’s degree in organ performance from the Julliard School of Music in NYC and attend a concert presented by the U.S. Naval Academy Men’s Glee Club with whom two of the young men from the Chamber Singers, Cody Crouse and Steven Glenn, will have the opportunity to join in the singing of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
The concert program includes “Set Me As A Seal” (Rene Clausen), “Salmo 150 (Ernani Aguilar) and “Remember” (Stephen Chatman, poetry written by Christina Rosetti).
In addition, the choir will join their voices with all of the participating choirs in the singing of the Navy Hymn, “Eternal Father Strong To Save” which is traditionally sung at the conclusion of every service held in the US Naval Academy Chapel.
The Chamber Singers making the trip include Hannah Allen, Cameron Caruso, Rebecca Chatterton, Jane Coty, Cassandra Crisafulli, Cody Crouse, Lauren Defoe, Shaughnessy Darrow, Billy DeLapp, Colton Dryden, Josh Ewig, Danielle Faivus, Tara Fresch, Monica George, Steven Glenn, Tiffany Green, Cali Harrington, Jessica Krauss, Erin McIntosh, Maddison Neuland, Joseph Ruggio, Katherine Schermerhorn, Rebecca Smith, Alex Todd and Nick Williams.
The Chamber Singers have participated in festivals of this nature in the past and have come home with highest honors and awards for their performances.
Twenty-five singers strong, the OHS Chamber Singers membership is selected by audition.
Students rehearse one period each day as well as occasional evenings.
The Chamber Singers are frequently asked to perform for the community and have performed numerous times for the Oswego Rotary Club, the Community Christmas Carol Sing sponsored by the Reformed Presbyterian Church and the Oswego City School District Board of Education.
They have also performed on several occasions with the Syracuse University Brass Ensemble as well as the Oswego Opera Theater for their production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
