The Adult Education Department at Oswego County BOCES hosted a commencement ceremony in late January to honor students completing the 730-hour Certified Medical Assistant Program.
Paul Gugel, director of Adult and Migrant Education at OCB welcomed family and friends to the ceremony and commended the graduates on their dedication to continuing their education.
He talked about the significance of the ceremony to celebrate the honorees’ achievements and spoke about living in the moment, quoting former Buffalo Bills coach Mark Levy’s words: “Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?” He asked the students to carry this philosophy with them after graduation and as they enter the medical field.
Also invited to address the graduates was OCB District Superintendent Christopher Todd and former OCB Certified Medical Assistant graduate Brittany Pickel.
A Certified Medical Assistant who now works at Dr. Ram’s office in Oswego, Pickel spoke about the transition from school to the workplace and said, “I am excited to go to work every day.”
She also talked about the importance of education to achieve one’s goals and said that attending the Oswego County BOCES program was “the best decision I ever made.”
Adult Education Instructor Shelly Spencer presented each graduate with a commemorative pin and diploma to confirm their completion of the program and successful certification attainment and then led them in reciting the traditional Medical Assisting Pledge.
Rounding out the ceremony was the recognition of class valedictorian, Ashley Barry, and class salutatorian, Stephanie Koch, as well as the students accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. Serving as America’s highest award for excellence in education, students Ashley Barry, Kim Buskey, Stephanie Koch, Rebecca Lovelace, Paula Molnar, Grace Shetler, and Emiley Winslow were selected for this prestigious honor.
The Certified Medical Assistant training program at OCB combines theory with hands-on learning experiences and is designed to exceed the standards for today’s in-demand jobs.
