SCRIBA, NY – As the March 12 weather forecast progressed from a winter storm to a blizzard warning, Oswego County government employees and community volunteers unloaded a tractor trailer load of Girl Scout cookies and sorted and delivered them to about 25 scout troops in the Oswego, New Haven, Mexico and Parish areas.
When all was said and done, a total of 28,980 boxes of cookies had been accounted for and delivered.
The five-hour exercise tested the county’s ability to distribute medical supplies through the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), the national repository of antibiotics, vaccines, and other critical medical equipment and supplies that might be necessary in a biological, chemical or other public health emergency.
“Federal authorities require state and local governments to be able to demonstrate their ability to request, receive, and dispense medications and other materials from the Strategic National Stockpile in the event of a large public health emergency,” said Jiancheng Huang, Oswego County Public Health Director. “Instead of using medical supplies, we worked with the Girl Scouts of NY PENN Pathways to sort and distribute thousands of cases of Girl Scout cookies to troops in the Oswego area.”
The cookies were delivered by a large tractor trailer to the County Highway Garage east of Oswego.
Staff from several county departments, including Health, Highway, Personnel, Buildings and Grounds, and Sheriff’s, Emergency Management, and Public Information offices inventoried the shipment, sorted them into orders for 25 troops and assisted in the distribution process.
Girl Scout leaders from the Oswego area loaded their vehicles with cases of cookies at the county highway garage.
County highway vehicles delivered truckloads to locations in Parish and Mexico.
