OSWEGO, New York – The Oswego County Historical Society (OCHS) is preparing for a month-long fundraiser called, “Be Historical. Keep Our History Alive!†that will be held this upcoming July throughout Oswego County, according to Connie Clancy, campaign committee chairperson for the OCHS Board of Trustees.
OCHS is planning to work with local businesses and merchants in the areas around Oswego County to set up the “Be Historical†campaign. The campaign will involve participating local grocery stores, hotels, convenience stores, restaurants, and other area businesses. Donation cans, campaign brochures, and other literature will be made available to participating locations. Those that participate will help “Keep Our History Alive†in Oswego County by requesting donations of $.50 from their patrons to support the Oswego County Historical Society, or through donation cans that will be available at checkout areas of their business.
“Tourism during the month of July has historically been one of the busiest months for Oswego County and the surrounding areas,†says Clancy, “Our goal is to take advantage of the increased activity and tourism by holding a fundraising campaign throughout the month of July this year.â€
OCHS has teamed up with Step One Creative, an Oswego-based marketing communications firm, to create exciting and visually appealing campaign materials and public relations to promote the “Be Historical†effort.
Oswego County businesses that support this fundraising effort will be provided all of the necessary materials to help with the campaign, and will be included in additional news releases specific to the month-long initiative.
Committee members will approach area businesses and merchants in the upcoming days and weeks about participating in the July campaign. Businesses that are interested in participating can also contact the Oswego County Historical Society at (315) 343-1342.
“We invite businesses to be a part of this effort in helping to preserve the history and heritage of Oswego County,†said Peg McKinstry, president of the OCHS Board of Trustees. “Our history is a vital part of who we are as a community, and as our government funding sources have diminished over the years, we have had to pursue new fundraising efforts and partners to keep our history alive.â€
OCHS is also reaching out to neighboring town or village historical societies to seek their support with the campaign. In appreciation of that partnership and support, the OCHS will return a percentage of the proceeds generated from that respective community back to the local historical organization.
“We hope that we can get other historical groups to recognize the importance of this campaign throughout the County, because our focus is to preserve the history of Oswego County, and we cannot do it without the entire region’s support,†said Clancy.
