OSWEGO, NY – On November 11, the Oswego County Humane Society will put up its annual “Light Up Their Lives” outdoor scoreboard to track its progress with pet adoptions during the 14th Annual Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption campaign.
The sign will feature photos of the pets available for adoption during the campaign, each with a light above it to signify when that pet finds its new home.
The sign will kick off the Humane Society’s Holiday Pet Adoption Celebration and open house, taking place on November 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oswego YMCA Armory, at 265 W. First St., Oswego.
The Humane Society has joined efforts with 4,000 shelters around the world to participate in the annual Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption campaign, founded by the Helen Woodward Animal Center in 1999 and supported by Iams Pet Foods.
The Humane Society is participating in the campaign from Oct.1, 2012, through Jan. 4, 2013, to do its share to help place 1.5 million pets into homes.
Diane Broadwell, chair of animal services for the Humane Society, explains the campaign like this: “More families bring pets into their homes during the holidays than at any other time of year. In the past some animal organizations have actually gone so far as to discourage families from adopting pets during the holidays. This did not stop them from getting new pets. It just took away the adoption option and forced them to support the puppy mill industry. Iams Home 4 the Holidays organizations work together to match the needs of the pets with the desires of families. Everybody wins!”
The goal for Oswego County is to find a home for every one of its pets in foster care.
That includes 75 cats and kittens right now, with more arriving every week, 10 dogs and one horse.
The Humane Society hopes that by putting a “face” on each of these pets, it can persuade animal lovers from all over the county to find places in their homes for them.
“We have placed 334 pets in good homes so far this year,” said Lee Maniccia, president of the Humane Society. “If we could find a home for every pet this Holiday season, that would be 430 adoptions for the year! Adoption not only lights up the life of a homeless animal, it lights up the life of the family that takes it in. What could be a better way to celebrate this season?”
Along with the Humane Society’s pets for adoption, Harbor Hounds Greyhound Rescue, Loki Grrl Rescue, and Paws Across Oswego County will be present with information about their programs, and some with their pets for adoption.
In addition, the Bone Diggers 4-H Club will present its award winning dog training routine.
In addition to pets for adoption, the Humane Society’s offices and spay/neuter clinic will be open that day for public viewing.
Staff and volunteers will be on hand to explain its programs, including the spay/neuter clinic for cats in low income families, the foster program for homeless pets, the barn cat program for spaying/neutering of free-roaming cats, and the humane education program.
Plus there will be pet photos with Santa, a gigantic ‘almost new’ book sale, free activities for children, grilled hamburgers, veggie burgers & hot dogs for lunch and a get ready for Thanksgiving bake sale.
Admission is free and open to everyone.
