Oswego County Youth Court Looking for New Members

OSWEGO – Oswego County Youth Court is reaching out to those interested in becoming members for the upcoming academic year.

Youth Court is a program aimed at reducing juvenile delinquency in Oswego County.

The program is a “trial by peers” process for offenders between the ages of seven and 18, who are charged with various crimes.

Youth Court cases are heard by three judges, a defense attorney, and a prosecutor, all of which are students.

Youth Court members are students from area schools who volunteer their time to provide a fair way for juvenile crime to be handled.
Students entering seventh through twelfth grade are eligible; those interested can fill out an application and will be notified of upcoming training sessions.

“In Youth Court, members can learn more about the legal system and juvenile law, as well as develop public speaking skills and leadership skills,” said Sam Crisafulli, county youth coordinator for the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. “Youth Court is also recognized by the National Honor Society and colleges and universities as an important element of community service.”

Youth Court provides members an opportunity to build a better community and school through their participation and service to youth.

The program is administered by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

The 2018 Youth Court Training will be held July 9 through 14 in Oswego.

Applications are available at area school guidance offices, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, or online at http://www.oswegocounty.com/youth/YouthCourt.html.
