The Rev. Blessed Unami Sikhosana-Bird, Bernie Bird and Kevin Fallis of the Blessed Sikhosana Foundation, Inc. presented the program at the July 29 meeting of the Rotary Club of Oswego. They shared with the Rotarians the work they are supporting in the village of Bolawayo, Zimbabwe.

They began by providing the village with clean water. In 2013, with a grant from the Rotary Foundation and a donation from the Rotary Club of Oswego, they build a well to provide clean and easily available water. Before that, young girls had to walk 5 miles to retrieve water. This well is still providing water today.

Their Foundation also provides girls in grades 1 – 7 with funds to attend school (which range from $110 – $220 a year per student).

There are more projects being planned. These include building a one-acre nutritional garden and drilling more wells.

The Rev. Sikhosana-Bird shared an African proverb: “Rain does not fall on one roof alone.” This means that the blessings we receive are to be shared and that, when we work together for a common good, we can accomplish more than we ever imagined.
