Oz Roller Girls Roll Out Community Support

OSWEGO, NY – The Oz Roller Girls, the community’s new flat-track women’s roller derby league, has blocked out time to address a number of community causes, from hunger to veteran support to animal welfare.

Meals via wheels - members of the Oz Roller Girls present Major Corinne Hayes of the Oswego Salvation Army with canned goods and other non-perishable food items collected from the community to support the local organization's food services. A portion of proceeds from that bout also supported the local Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic.

Leading up to their first bout, the team mounted a food drive to support the Oswego Salvation Army food services that help hungry families in the community.

Thanks to a generous response, the team could deliver many bags of non-perishable food.

The Oz Roller Girls’ first bout, on April 23 vs. the Crown City Royal Pains, designated a portion of proceeds to support the local Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic.

In addition to scoring a victory in their home debut, the organization raised $196 to support the clinic.

For the next bout, May 14 in Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink, Oz chose the Oswego County Humane Society as its designated charity.

In a doubleheader, starting at 6 p.m., the Oz Roller Girls will take on Watertown’s Black River Rollers as well as debut a pair of intra-league teams, the Port City Sirens and the Nukes of Hazzard.

A portion of proceeds and an ongoing collection will support a spay/neuter clinic.
