OSWEGO — SUNY Oswego will host “A Conversation About Health-Care Reform,” a panel discussion about the myths and realities of the hot topic, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Penfield Library’s Lake Effect Cafe.
Expert panelists will include Dr. Said Atri of SUNY Oswego’s economics department, Gwen Kay of Oswego’s history department and Dr. Dennis Norfleet, Oswego County’s public health director.
The panel is an opportunity to get beyond the noise and to the facts behind the health-care debate, said Nola Heidlebaugh, coordinator of the college’s Civic Engagement Coalition.
“According to Arnold Relman, former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, Americans pay almost twice as much per capita for health care as citizens in other developed nations,” Heidlebaugh said. “And yet, even though we spend nearly one out of every five dollars of our GDP on health care, resources are distributed unevenly to our citizens.”
Topics will include whether reform is necessary, what kinds of reform may be possible or prudent, implications of a public option, the impact of patient demands on the system and results from historical precedents — Medicare and Medicaid.
