OSWEGO, New York – On November 19th, your holiday grocery shopping trip to Paul’s Big M will greatly benefit the Salvation Army and the Oswego community.

For more than 125 years, residents of this community have turned to the Oswego Salvation Army for food, financial assistance and spiritual support. This year, grocery retailer Paul’s Big M is supporting the Army and their I Believe campaign, by donating five percent of all proceeds from sales on Thursday, November 19.

“We wanted to support the Salvation Army building campaign because they do such a good job of helping to take care of the people of Oswego,” said Paul’s Big M General Manager Allen Manwaring.

The supermarket, located in the former New York Central Train Station at the corner of Utica and West First streets, has served the community since 1954. It became known as Paul’s Big M in 1977 when the store was sold to Paul Heins, who turned it over to his daughter, Karen Connors, 22 years later. Over the years, the family has made significant improvements to the property, including Heins’ addition of PJ’s Ice Cream Shop.

Although this is the first year for the November 19th “community event,” as Manwaring called it, Paul’s Big M has established a year-round reputation for generous community support in the form of food, money or matching donations. For years, that has included the donation of bread and other food items to the Oswego Salvation Army community food pantry.

“We’ve always worked very hard to help out people in the community,” Manwaring said, estimating that the total value of the store’s charitable giving reaches $50,000 annually. Oswego Salvation Army Major Corinne Hayes expressed excitement to work with such a popular retailer toward the common goal of renovating the West Second Street headquarters building. The project will expand kitchen and dining space and create more storage room for food.

“People shopping for Thanksgiving in Oswego go to Paul’s Big M. They really do, so if they shop on November 19th, it can be a huge support,” Hayes said. “We’re very excited about the potential this holds, and the opportunity to work with the community as well.”

The Oswego Salvation Army is part of the International Salvation Army organization, which is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. The local citadel provides food, education, services and spiritual support to the local community.
