Paul V. Moore Students Presented With Presidential Volunteer Service Awards

Paul V. Moore High School is proud to announce eight bronze level, six silver level and 22 gold level recipients of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Combined, these students have volunteered 9,409.74 hours in the greater community of Central Square Central. These hours multiplied by the NY State minimum hourly wage of $9 per hour is a savings of $84,687.75 to the non-profit organizations they volunteered with.

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and to encourage more people to serve.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award program was established as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

According to www.presidentialserviceawards.gov, “Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service.”

Volunteer service coordinator at Paul V. Moore High School Debbie O’Mara said that many of the students volunteered with fire departments, libraries, hospitals, parent organizations within the District’s elementary schools, animal rescue organizations, nursing homes, local town and villages, student opportunities and leadership conference, summer recreation programs, community parade bands and sports booster clubs.

Many of the students also raised money through walking for various organizations like the American Cancer Society, CRPS, Breast Cancer, MS, Autism and American Heart.

There are three levels of awards for high school students: bronze (for 100-174 hours), silver (for 175-249) hours and gold for volunteering in excess of 250 hours.

Bronze level winners include: Karleen Aserian, Alivia Bird, Kayla Cook, Megan Guanciale, Alexandra Hayes, Elizabeth Lobdell, Scott Machuga and Mackayla White.

Silver level winners include: Samantha Gass, Brittany Gavin, Stanley Kubis Jr., Ericka LaMay, M. Logan McGill and Morgan Moreira.

Gold level winners include: Matthew Baskall, Samantha Bentz, Hannah Croteau, Olivia Delahunt, Leigh-Ann Dence, McKenna Gribbon, Brianna Grimes, Kayla Gugino, Natalie Guzelak, Richard Howley, Sophie Meyers, Rebecca Murphy, Baleigh Myers, Madeline Perry, Lauren Sauve, Kalie Schumaker, Abbey Shields, Tyler Stassi, Samanth Stetson, Dustin Swizdor, Brianna Warren and Winston Wiseth.

All Presidential Volunteer Service Award winners will receive a lapel pin and certificate designating their level award along with a signed letter of appreciation from President Obama.

In addition, they will receive a cord of distinction to wear at graduation.

“Everyone at Paul V. Moore High School would like to congratulate these fine young adults on their accomplishment,” said O’Mara. “They will be valuable citizens wherever their next chapter in life takes them.”
