MEXICO, NY – Performing art students from Oswego County, across New York State and as far away as Los Angeles, Calif., spent the last two weeks of July participating in Oswego County BOCES’ Summerfame Musical Theater Program.
Held at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, this overnight performing arts summer school gave students in grades eight through twelve the opportunity to work with award-winning professionals and experience hands-on the world of musical theater and technical theater design.
Students opting for the musical theater portion of the Summerfame program focused much of their time on acting, singing, and choreography while technical theater design students learned insightful tips and tricks into the world of set design, lighting, audio, special effects, and stage management.
Incorporated into the program’s curriculum were some off-campus experiences such as a visit to the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn to see the Broadway classic “No, No, Nanette” along with a field trip and an opportunity to participate in the Sterling Renaissance Festival during the pirate-themed weekend.
As a special treat, technical theater design students traveled to Oswego during Harborfest weekend to assist in managing the regional and national acts performing at the festival’s main stage.
As a culmination event, the Summerfame cast and crew of more than thirty performed a Shakespeare-esque piece for family, friends and theatergoers called A Mid-Summerfame Dream.
