PJC Announces Scholarship Winner

OSWEGO, NY – Michele Reed, president of the Professional Journalists and Communicators of Oswego County, has announced that Christina Dehm is the recipient of the PJC’s annual Muriel Allerton Scholarship Award.

A charter member of the PJC, Allerton has served the club admirably for the past 40 years and continues to be an active member.

Each year, the award is given in her name to a graduating high school student who has demonstrated a high level of interest, aptitude and proficiency in their chosen field of study during his or her high school career.

Past award recipients have included students who chose careers in print or broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising or graphic design.

“We had many qualified candidates this year. Scholarship committee chairperson Kelly Jordal and her committee did an excellent job in selecting a well-deserving candidate. According to Kelly, Christina produced outstanding samples of her work and was very clear about her goals as she continues her education in the communications field. We are pleased to be able to award her this scholarship,” said Reed.

Dehm is a 2011 graduate of Oswego High School and will be attending SUNY Oswego for Broadcasting and Mass Communications in the fall. She was actively involved in her school’s television studio, WBUC, for the last four years. Her participation included directing, anchoring and technical production. Last October, the Oswego High School WBUC communications program sent two teams to compete in the Panic Film Festival sponsored by the SUNY Oswego Film Club. They were the only high school students to participate in the contest and Christina’s group won an honorable mention over 14 other teams.

Dehm was also a writer for the Oswego High School newspaper, The Buccaneer Bulletin. In May, she won a bronze certificate for her feature story about changing the Pledge of Allegiance during High School Press Day at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University.
