UPDATE: Oswego County DSS Building Threat Update

OSWEGO COUNTY – Earlier today, September 2nd, 2026, at around 11:19 AM, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Oswego County Department of Social Services, located at 100 Spring Street in the Town of Mexico, for a report of a threat to the building.

As a result, all people were evacuated as a precautionary measure and employees were sent home. The building was thoroughly searched, and the threat was deemed not credible. The Department of Social Services will re-open tomorrow, September 3rd, to resume normal services.

Following investigation, Edward Browning, 29, of Volney, was arrested for Making a Terroristic Threat. Browning was held pending arraignment in Oswego County CAP Court.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the New York State Police, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Mexico Fire Department, and McFee Ambulance Service.

Oswego County DSS Building Evacuated Due to Threat

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Department of Social Services, 100 Spring St., Mexico, was evacuated this morning, Sept. 2, due to a threat to the building.

An initial investigation determined the threat was unfounded; however, the building will remain closed for the rest of the day. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office will continue its investigation into the incident.

Staff are no longer in their offices, and the public should not report to the building. Those who have an appointment today should re-schedule when the offices re-open tomorrow, Sept. 3.

Oswego County Mobility Management also reports that the closure affects the Centro and Oswego County Public Transit bus stop located within the DSS parking lot. Riders are advised to use the bus stop across the street on state Route 3 and flag the bus they want to ride.
