Playing For Poverty To Benefit Area Food Pantries

FULTON, NY – Food pantries throughout Oswego County will soon be receiving some much needed help courtesy of the third annual Playing 4 Poverty.

Established by a coalition of human service agencies, Playing 4 Poverty, A Food Aid Concert for Oswego County, is an exciting, fun event that seeks to raise awareness of hunger and poverty in Oswego County.

Scheduled for Sept. 11, the event will feature a full day of music, food, and fun.

During the event The Playing for Poverty Collaboration will be accepting cash donations and non-perishable food items for distribution to area food pantries.

Over the past two years area food pantries have seen a sharp increase in the number of families and individuals that are in need of food subsidy and are accessing their services.

Agencies such as the Rural Migrant Ministries in Richland, which has seen a 100% increase in number of people they serve, look forward to the added support they receive from Playing 4 Poverty.

“Food donations are extremely important,” said Penny Kimball, director of the Rural Migrant Ministry. “We depend on the donations we receive from school food drives, local churches and the Memory Tree. They help alleviate the strain on our food pantry and allow us to meet the growing demand for food subsidy here in the northeastern part of Oswego County. If it wasn’t for the generous donations we receive from events such as Playing 4 Poverty and caring local organizations such as the Pulaski Lions Club we would be hard pressed to be able to serve the amount of families and individuals that depend on our food pantry. Thanks to Playing 4 Poverty we are able to serve more people, especially during the holiday season when demand is the greatest.”

Located just off County Route 2 at 15 Stewart St. in Richland the Rural Migrant Ministries is open Monday and Wednesday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Their food pantry distributes food as requested during operating hours.

The agency also offers a free health clinic, a community group, an afterschool program, art classes, nutrition and fitness classes and a family camp.

Playing 4 Poverty will be held at the Bull Head Point Pavilion in Fulton.
