Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Top 10 Toxins For Pets

Porky and Buddy

Dear Readers,
We love the ASPCA. They do such good work on a national level on all kinds of animal issues, but the one part of their work that we love the most is the information they provide to pet owners.

We rely on that for the technical information in  many of these columns.

And, here we go again.

Just last week, the ASPCA put out its list of the top ten most common toxins for pets in 2015 as reported to the ASPCA Poison Control Center.

It’s a sobering list, but you should read it, and go to www.ASPCA.org for more detailed information.

The top ten are:

1.            Over-the-counter medications;

2.            Human prescription medications;

3.            Insecticides;

4.            Human foods, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, alcohol and xylitol are the most common;

5.            Household items;

6.            Veterinary medications;

7.            Chocolate, especially dark chocolate;

8.            Plants, both inside and out, go to the ASPCA site for specific plants;

9.            Rodenticides, remember they are intended to kill warm-blooded animals;

10.          Lawn and garden products, especially herbicides and fungicides.

Please think about precautions that you might want to take with some of these items.

Know that if you have any suspicion that your beloved pet has eaten something stupid, call your vet right away or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

  1. Veterinary medicines? If you have any questions that your pet has eaten anything prescribed by your vet, call your vet right away? HUH???

    Our pet got spayed and now pees @ night. Not her fault, just modified plumbing. So, the vet prescribed some meds to help it stop. Are you saying ALL pet meds?

    Sorry, #6 raises more questions than it answers. The rest all make sense.
