I have a 15-year-old house cat who recently went stone deaf. I was wondering if you have any ideas about what may have caused it, as everything else about her is normal.

Thanks for your interesting question. What is not normal about your cat is the fact that she is actually sort of old, not ancient by any means – but old enough that, like people, she may develop age-related hearing loss.
The important thing to do though, if you haven’t already, is to take her to your vet to be checked out.
While hearing loss can be just part of a general age-related decline, it can also be caused by treatable conditions, infections, ear mites, growths inside the ear canal to name the most common culprits.
The fact that you think this happened suddenly makes us suspicious that something else may be going on.
So a visit to your vet is definitely called for, and at her age should be part of your annual routine.
Old age is definitely not for sissies. But, your vet can make it an easier journey for both of you.
