Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Inc. is offering a new volunteer orientation for its fall season on Wednesday, August 11 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The session will be held in the Pathfinder Conference Room at 34 East Bridge Street, Suite 301, Oswego.
No prior teaching experience is necessary to become a tutor, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. All prospective volunteers must attend an orientation session prior to enrolling in training. A schedule of training dates will be provided at the orientation.
The need for volunteers in our community is great. Tutors help adults improve their literacy skills to achieve their individual goals, such as securing employment, passing the U.S. Citizenship test, reading with their children, using community services and obtaining a GED. Helping adults meet their literacy needs also promotes greater self-sufficiency and greater community involvement.
LVOC has been the community’s expert on adult literacy since 1969, providing a crucial element in helping adults improve their family’s safety, stability, and security. LVOC believes the path to personal freedom is paved with the ability to read.
