Quest at SUNY Oswego to Celebrate Scholarship, Creativity

OSWEGO — SUNY Oswego’s Quest day on April 21 will feature at least 275 student and faculty presenters, the music of the West Bengali group Ganga, a display of environmentally advanced cars, a six-foot-tall exhibit with tracks for marbles, creative writing awards and much more.

Quest, the annual celebration of scholarly and creative activity, provides a day off from classes in lieu of scores of educational, entertaining and enlightening events.

Jack Gelfand, Quest coordinator and director of the Office of Research and Special Programs, roams his planning room in the college’s Culkin Hall and gestures excitedly from one list of undergraduate research projects to another.

Here he points out a presentation titled “Wind Power Potential in New York State.” There, another titled “Foraging Ecology of Coyotes in New York State.” Here, he sees Qiong June Dong, professor of marketing and management, pulling together a series of presentations on humanitarian logistics in catastrophes like the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. There, Gelfand sees one end of the Campus Center arena dotted with an electric car, a wood-gas conversion truck, a Smart car and other vehicles.

The vehicle display will remain in place for the college’s first Sustainability Fair, 4 to 8 p.m. April 21 in the arena. “I’m really looking forward to this,” Gelfand said. “The booths and the cars in the arena — this is going to be a real show.”

Meanwhile, the Student Association Programming Board has chosen Jim Keady, a noted anti-sweatshops activist, as featured speaker. His presentation, “Behind the Swoosh,” will be 1 p.m. during Quest in the Campus Center auditorium.

Ganga, whose folksongs celebrate the Indian state of Bengal, will appear 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Sheldon Hall ballroom
