Reading Program Takes Flight At Pulaski Library

By Stacey Petersen, AmeriCorps
PULASKI, NY – The Summer Reading Program at the Pulaski Public Library has taken flight! The theme this summer is One World, Many Stories.

Tom, Erin, Connor, Caleb, Chloe, and Robert enjoy Irish crafts. “We get a little goofy while we travel here at the library,” Petersen said.

I am greatly enjoying being the children’s travel guide for the summer. I am in charge of the summer reading program at the Pulaski library through a position with AmeriCorps. I am an AmeriCorps member which means I am serving with an AmeriCorps program that commits to engage in community service for an intensive period of time.

AmeriCorps members serve through thousands of nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. AmeriCorps members’ activities address critical needs in their communities, and take many forms. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters, among other activities.

I graduated from Pulaski in 2007 and am currently at SUNY Oswego where I will be receiving my bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education this December after I complete my student teaching in the fall.

I love teaching, it is where I find myself the happiest and this AmeriCorps position has allowed me the opportunity to continue doing what I love. I will take my experiences this summer with me where I go onto teach for years to come.

Each week myself and the children travel to a new destination. We have much more in common with the world than we thought! We read stories, play games, create crafts and learn about tons of new places through fun activities.

In Germany, they play a lot of soccer. And here we enjoy game time too! Pictured are Olivia, Jessica, Riley, Logan, Emily, Bella.

Just recently, we traveled by hot air balloon to Ireland and got our Irish on! The world is a playground and we have just scratched the surface.

This program is open to school aged students on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. and pre-school aged students on Fridays at 10 a.m. as well.

I have started planning a Community Service Project that will take place throughout the entire month of August. I will be holding a canned food drive for any volunteers who wish to participate in this cause to help better those in need.

Throughout the Pulaski community there will be boxes placed for donations that have been decorated by the children here at the Pulaski Summer Reading Program. We are collecting canned food items while we travel and learn about the world. We are learning how to stay healthy by talking about nutrition and fitness and we are looking to give to others that need it most.

For more information, contact me at (315) 298-6202 or (315) 569-3094 or stop into the library all summer long. I’ll be here, even if it looks like I’ve been on safari or sailing the high seas. We’d love for you to join us!
