Oswego music teacher Stephen Defren said, “These musicians from our nation’s Navy are versatile to say the least. During the day a jazz quartet performed for members of the concert band, symphonic band and concert orchestra. The quartet of an electric bass, drum set, guitar and saxophone entertained the students with their rendition of several top 40 songs. The performance was followed by an insightful question and answer session, which involved discussions on life as a sailor and a musician.”

At the same time, three of the musicians spent time with the Chamber Singers.

The Chamber Singers will be were performing in a festival at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

This opportunity was a perfect dress rehearsal.

The members of the Navy group acted as adjudicators for the group and gave them some valuable feedback.

Defren said, “The members of the Chamber Singers were also able to sing the Navy Hymn for our service members; a memorable moment for sure.”

Defren noted, “The jazz quartet was also able to play with and critique members of the Jazz Ensemble B. They discussed aspects of jazz ensemble playing and had a wonderful demonstration of improvisation. At the end of the day, one of our students Evelyn Horan was also able to get some feedback on an original song she had written. It was truly an entertaining and educational day and quite an honor to have members of our military spend time with our students.”
