Rural Health Network of Oswego County Celebrates 2024 Rural Health Champions and Nominees

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Rural Health Network of Oswego County proudly recognized five extraordinary individuals as Rural Health Champion Nominees during its annual awards event, honoring their exceptional contributions to the health and well-being of rural communities. Among these nominees, Mary Margaret Pekow and Dean Wright were selected as Rural Health Network Champions, receiving the highest recognition for their impactful leadership and advocacy.

To honor these incredible individuals, the Rural Health Network hosted a celebratory luncheon on Rural Health Day, generously provided by Fidelis Care, bringing together community leaders, colleagues, and supporters to acknowledge their invaluable contributions.

“The work of these champions and nominees exemplifies the power of dedication, innovation, and compassion in addressing the unique challenges of rural health,” said Joelle Hutson, Director of the Rural Health Network of Oswego County. “By celebrating their efforts, we hope to inspire others to make a difference in their communities and ensure that health equity is a priority for all.”

Nominees for the 2024 Rural Health Champion Award

Amy Champlin – Recovery Coach and Advocate, The Desens House
Nominated by Dean Wright, Executive Director, The Desens House
“Amy has transformed lives through her work supporting women in recovery from substance use disorders,” said Dean Wright. “She organizes peer support groups, advocates for social change, and helps women reconnect with their families and their purpose. Her unwavering dedication has made her a fierce advocate for hope and dignity.”

Mercedes Whiteside – Educator and Victim Advocate, Oswego County Opportunities
Nominated by Amy Campolieto, Victim Advocate, SAF
“Mercedes is one of the kindest, most dedicated advocates I know,” shared Amy Campolieto. “She raises awareness about domestic violence in Oswego County, works with children to pave the way for a better future, and stands alongside survivors in their most vulnerable moments. Her compassion and strength are unmatched.”

Luanne Arcos-Brown – Bilingual Outreach Advocate, Oswego County Opportunities
Nominated by Cali Sweeting, Service Delivery & Planning Coordinator, Oswego County Opportunities
“Luanne is a bridge for Oswego County’s agricultural workers, many of whom face barriers like language, transportation, and cost in accessing healthcare,” said Cali Sweeting. “Her advocacy, translation, and education efforts have connected hundreds of underserved individuals to vital services. Her work literally changes lives, one person at a time.”

Mary Margaret Pekow – Executive Director, Catholic Charities of Oswego County
Nominated by Leanna Cleveland, Director of Health & Nutrition Services, Oswego County Opportunities
“Mary Margaret has an unparalleled commitment to serving Oswego County’s most vulnerable populations,” said Leanna Cleveland. “Her vision ensures that programs like Rides to Recovery, the Food Pantry, and Mental Health Transportation meet critical needs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she went above and beyond, showing up daily to support her team and the community. She is not just a leader—she is a role model for compassion and perseverance.”

Joelle Hutson also praised Mary Margaret’s impact, noting, “Mary Margaret’s leadership has made an indelible mark on rural health in Oswego County. Her dedication reminds us all of the power of aligning resources with the real needs of our communities.”

Dean Wright – Executive Director, The Desens House
Nominated by Katie Pagliaroli, Senior Vice President; COO/CNO, Oswego Health
“Dean’s work at The Desens House has created a lifeline for women recovering from substance use disorders,” said Katie Pagliaroli. “Her thoughtful leadership has built a supportive community where individuals can heal, grow, and thrive. Whether providing safe housing, peer mentorship, or partnerships with local organizations, Dean embodies what it means to be a Rural Health Champion.”

“Dean’s vision for recovery-focused care is transforming lives in Oswego County,” added Joelle Hutson. “Her work ensures that every woman who walks through the doors of The Desens House is met with compassion, dignity, and opportunity.”
