Sandy Creek Holds 10th Annual Battle Of The Books

SANDY CREEK – The Sandy Creek Central School District hosted its 10th Annual Battle of the Books Competition to determine grade level winners who will represent the district at the Oswego County Battle of the Books Competition on Feb. 28.

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive where teams of up to three students read books from a list of ten selected specifically for the battle each year, and then answer 16 questions about those books that begin, “In which book…”

The teams earn points for the correct title and author.

Teams are divided by grade level.

Level 1 is made up of students in grades 3-4, level 2 is grade 5, level 3 grades 6-8, and level 4 is grades 9-12.

The Sandy Creek Battle saw 40 students compete for the honor to represent the district at the championship; the Oswego County Battle, where teams from districts across the county compete against each other for the title.

Level 1, grade 3-4 saw Team emoji, with members Aaron Grafton, Kiley Procko and Kelsie Ridgeway take the top spot.

Level 2, grade 5, saw team Dollars with members Perle Convey, Kiana Clark and Skylar Clark finish in the lead.

The grade 6-8, level 3 team was unopposed and used the competition as a practice session.

Team Do-Read-Os with members Maiya Hathway, Abby Chen and Elizabeth Glazier will represent the district at the county battle.

Grades 9-12 saw the Freshman Elite team take the title with members Sydney Cook, Madison Brown and McKenzie Kwak making up that team.

Battle of the Books is coordinated in the Sandy Creek District by Library Media Specialist Rachel Allen.

Coaches for the teams include Cynthia Rudd, grades 3-4; Brandie Norton, grade 5; Karin Nemier, grades 6-8; and Jackie Gregg, grades 9-12.

The Oswego County Battle of the Books will be held on Feb. 28, beginning at 6 p.m.

The Oswego City School District will host.
