With the dog days of summer soon approaching, students in the Sandy Creek Central School District recently provided a helping hand to Paws Across Oswego County, a local organization designed to protect animals.
After hearing the story of Apollo, a four-year-old lab who was found in New Haven freezing and starving this January, Sandy Creek students were ignited to collect items to donate to Paws Across Oswego County.
“Every year the kids do some sort of community service project,” said teacher Jodi Whitney. “And our eighth graders heard about Apollo and that sparked the idea.”
In all, the students were able to fill multiple boxes with items such as canned food, toys and treats.
During the collection process, several large bags of food were also donated to the cause, Whitney said.
“I am extremely proud of the donations that we received this year. We had several staff members contribute, students in grades sixth to eighth, some high school students and even Deaton’s Agway in Pulaski provided a generous donation,” Whitney said.
Whitney said the district is still planning on accepting donations throughout the remainder of the school year, and also plans on doing a similar donation initiative next year.
