OSWEGO, NY – Oswego County students in need of school supplies will find it easier to get ready for school thanks to the United Way Success By 6 “Stuff-A-Bus†campaign.
The campaign, which began in June and will culminate on Aug. 14, was initiated to collect school supplies so that children in need throughout Oswego County would have the supplies they need to begin the new school year.
The United Way and Success By 6 are soliciting area businesses and individuals and have arranged for 10 busses to be located throughout Oswego County where people will be able to donate school supplies.
“We are hoping to have a positive response to our ‘Stuff-A-Bus’ campaign,” said director of the Success program Bonnie Holmes. “Everyone has always been very receptive to the campaign and the generous donations that we receive will go a long way in making sure that children in need in Oswego County will have the supplies they need to successfully begin the new school year.â€Â
Volunteers from the Oswego County Teachers Association and United Way Success By 6 staff will sort the collected supplies with a portion going to all of the school districts in Oswego County.
Volunteers will then be distributing the school supplies throughout Oswego County as follows:
APW School District, Aug. 19, noon – 3 p.m. at the Altmar and Parish elementary schools.
Central Square School District, Aug. 18, 8 – 11:30 a.m. at the District Office.
Fulton School District, Aug. 19, 9 a.m. at the Fairgrieve Elementary School.
Hannibal School District, Aug. 19, 4 – 6 p.m. during orientation at the Hannibal High School Library.
Mexico School District, Aug. 18 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Mexico Elementary.
Oswego City School District, Aug. 18, 10 a.m. at Leighton Elementary School.
Phoenix School District, Aug. 19, 9 a.m. – noon at Maroun Elementary School.
Pulaski School District, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. – noon at the Laura Sharp Elementary School auditorium.
Sandy Creek School District, Aug. 18, 9 a.m. – noon at the District Office.
Melanie Trexler, executive director of United Way of Greater Oswego County, said that school supplies will be available to any child (or family) who would find it challenging to purchase the supplies that their child needs for school.
Teachers will be on hand to assist and guide the children and to make sure that they get the supplies they really need.

we found out by accident today that school supplies were being given out to those who need a little boost getting the school year started. i found from a neighbors visitor that there even was a supply give away after she went herself. i asked why she didn’t mention it to me she said she didn’t think of it. she said it started at 8am, she arrived on time and by the time she got her turn at 8:30am there was hardly anything left and it was an all out free-for-all with people grabbing tons of stuff and even fighting over it. amazing how the city managed to have surplus to run theirs to have a second day and ours didn’t last even 2 hours? why wasn’t there organization, monitored distribution, proof your kids attend, how many kids, supply list maybe. the woman i spoke to said she grabbed 15 boxes of crayons for example and an excess in every thing else she possibly could that she was giving to her friends. so my two kids didn’t get even a single pencil while other got way too much. why is this? other than a disgraceful lack of organization. my two kids would like an answer please.
