OSWEGO TOWN – Area seniors are counting down for the Senior Camp retreat held twice each year at Camp Hollis in the town of Oswego.
The theme this year is “Senior Camp Rocks!”
Registration is under way for area residents 50 years young and older for the June 11 and 12 Senior Camp.
Limited optional overnight accommodations are available for those interested in staying overnight Monday.
Longtime Senior Camp volunteer Frances (Fran) Wadas is taking registrations at 315-343-2381 or 315-806-4256.
With one’s email address, she can email out the registration form.
Camp director Matthew Wood will lead off at 9 a.m. June 11 with a report about the exciting major improvement projects completed and under way at Camp Hollis.
Many people know Camp Hollis as the Oswego County owned and operated co-ed summer camp for children ages 8 to 14.
The beautiful lakeshore site also is home for senior campers twice each year.
Senior Camp program is now in its 26th consecutive year.
Camp Hollis will come alive during June’s Senior Camp with lots of old time “rock n’ roll” music, arts and crafts demonstrations and many program opportunities.
Programs scheduled throughout the two-day event include a gentle yoga class with Lu Ann Sommers, a Zumba Gold dancing class with Susan Mayer, nature walk opportunities with Wood, rock gardening with Master Gardner June Ouellette, even some ‘just for fun’ games including water balloons.
Karen Potter, program planner for Senior Camp, said LuAnn Sommers will be offering a Stix exercise class and Joe Trianoforo will provide an inspirational talk on the subject of love.
Seniors will have a chance to “shake, rattle and roll” on Tuesday with featured special guest Tom Gilbo as he presents a tribute to Elvis.
Gilbo is a popular Central New York entertainer who has been singing tributes to Elvis Presley since he was a child.
Sharing his special artistic talent will be Jim Demars of Jimz Rocks.
A native Fultonian now retired, he lives in Liverpool.
He will talk about the popular hobby of rock painting enjoyed by many people these days.
Demars and his wife, Linda, will facilitate a workshop on rock painting for those who are interested in giving it a try, as well as for veterans of the hobby who simply want to enhance their hobby.
Also on the arts and crafts agenda, returning to share their expertise, will be artist Laurie Kester with Linda Shannon.
They will help participants create attractive small gift boxes.
This session is underwritten by the Art Association of Oswego.
Returning to guide yet another creative class, molding masks, will be Linda Knowles with Pat Turner, underwritten by The Salmon River Fine Arts Center in Pulaski.
A drum-a-long with drummer Rich Faith is planned for the Monday night campfire.
It is planned to hold the campfire closer to the main building this year.
Bring along a lawn chair, if you are able, when packing for the two-day retreat.
Camp Hollis sports 12 small cabins, a large recreation and dining building, a craft cabin, a large pavilion, spacious fields and nature trails.
Camp Hollis is located on Health Camp Road off West Lake Road along the southern shores of Great Lake Ontario in Oswego Town.
Many seniors attend year after year and look forward to getting together for fellowship and new learning experiences.
Veterans and newcomers alike cherish this time together.
Oswego County prohibits the use of all tobacco products and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on all property owned or leased by the county (Local Law #4 of 2016).
Thus, it should be noted – smoking isn’t allowed at Camp Hollis.

Options include the two-day overnight program with check-in at 8:30 a.m. Monday and check-out at 3 p.m. Tuesday, breakfast at 8 a.m. then attending for the daytime program either day or for both days; or Monday only with evening meal and program.
