Sheriff’s Office Offers Corrections Officer Recruitment Information Night

OSWEGO – The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) is opening its doors to give interested applicants an opportunity to learn about careers in the agency’s corrections division. Jail administrators are inviting anyone who has considered working in law enforcement and corrections, those who have signed up for the upcoming employment screening, or others who are in search of a career that offers job security with competitive pay and benefits to join them for an informational session. The session will be hosted at the Public Safety Center located at 39 Churchill Road, Oswego. New York on Tuesday, December 16th from 5:00-7:00 P.M.

Corrections officers are sworn peace officers tasked with managing individuals housed in a correctional facility and providing for the safety and security of civilian and sworn staff, the public, and the incarcerated population. They manage incarcerated individuals in housing units as well as in public for the purpose of court appearances, medical appointments, and other necessary secure transports.

The December 16th Info Session will give the public insight into the role of a modern corrections officer. The event will include a presentation by Sergeant Brett Counterman and Lieutenant Geoff Beresford of the OCSO, Corrections Division, that will discuss the duties and expectations associated with being entrusted by the public to maintain safety and security of incarcerated individuals housed in the Oswego County correctional facility.

According to Sergeant Counterman, “With shifting attitudes and public perception of corrections and law enforcement in general, recruitment has been challenging. Our hope is that we can inform people who have considered this profession and give them a better understanding of the operations of our correctional facility and what a career in corrections has to offer people. Despite various misperceptions, what you need to be successful in this career is an effective communicator and problem solver.”

The event will cover topics such as job duties and expectations, the hiring and training process, current pay and benefits, and a guided question and answer session for interested parties.

For questions about attendance please email Sgt. Counterman via email [email protected]
