FULTON, NY – The Parent Education Program at Catholic Charities of Oswego County continues to grow as it welcomes Stacie Roberts as the programs newest parent educator.
No stranger to Catholic Charities’ many programs and services, Roberts returns to the agency where she was once a coordinator with Catholic Charities’ Kinship Support Program.
Roberts, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Justice from SUNY Oswego, left the agency to pursue her Master’s Degree in Education, which she also received from SUNY Oswego.
As a parent educator she will have the opportunity to put her teaching skills to good use as she works to educate parents and provide in-home supportive outreach for families who are at risk of losing their children to foster care or are attempting to reunite with their children.
“I am happy to be doing what I love to do, helping others and working with children and their families,†said Roberts. “I had such a wonderful experience when I was at Catholic Charities before and I’m fortunate that I have the opportunity to return to the agency and be part of their Parent Education Program.â€Â
Roberts is currently working with 14 families in the program, meeting with them on a weekly basis and helping them develop the necessary skills that will allow them to establish and maintain a healthy and productive family environment.
“It’s a real benefit to be able to meet with the families in their own home. It gives me the opportunity to see how the parents and children interact and helps me develop a trusting relationship where they are open to learning new ideas and skills that will make them better parents. I don’t have all the answers, but I am able I able to provide them with pertinent information such as the importance of effective communication, age appropriate discipline, dealing with behavioral needs, and even how to establish a budget for their household. If there are other services the family can benefit from I will refer them as needed and ensure that they are able to access those programs and services.†she said.
Another one of her duties that Roberts is looking forward to is teaching the parenting classes that are offered through Catholic Charities.
“I’m excited about teaching these classes. It gives me the opportunity to work with a number of parents in a classroom setting and help them gain a clearer perspective on how to effectively deal with their children and handle any issues that may arise. Catholic Charities currently offers parenting classes for newborns through teens,” she said.
Supervisor of the Parent Education Program, Andrea Burritt, recognizes the positive impact that Roberts will have on the program.
“With a Masters Degree in Education and New York State Teaching certification for both birth through second grade and first through sixth grade, Stacie brings with her a wealth of knowledge. She is welcome addition to our staff,†said Burritt.
