Students Share Poetry

Students at the Stepping Stones Day Program celebrated Poetry Month by participating in the Fourth Street School’s second annual Poetry Café.

CiTi library media specialist Tammy Cummings said several students wrote their own poems after learning about various styles poetry in class and in the library media center, where the poetry event was recently held.

They created shape poetry, where the subjects were inspired by shapes such as hearts, hands and animation characters.

They also read reverse poems, which Cummings said are the most difficult to write because they are read from top to bottom and then from bottom to top, which provides a different meaning.

Several staff members applauded the students for their bravery when they read poems in front of their peers.

Stepping Stones Day Program is a collaborative effort between CiTi and Hillside Children’s Center, which provides a structured, small-group environment to help students overcome emotional and behavioral challenges so they may return to their home school district.
