OSWEGO, NY – Thanks to local author and SUNY Oswego Professor Emeritus, Dr. Harold Nash’s latest book, Three Good Men, Dr. John J. Readling is being remembered for his contributions to his community and the positive impact he had on the lives he touched.
For the past 17 years the John J. Readling Award, named for the founder of the Department of Educational Administration, has been awarded annually to the SUNY Oswego Educational Administration graduates who, by peer nomination are voted the ones most likely to make a significant contribution to the field.
Faculty members tabulate the recommendations and make the final selections.
The award is presented to one member of the graduating class in each of the institution’s three cohorts: Central New York, North Country, and Finger Lakes Region.
When Linda Rae Markert, dean of SUNY Oswego’s School of Education, heard of Dr. Nash’s book, she saw it as an opportunity to further recognize Dr. Readling’s contributions and a way for recipients of the John J. Readling Award to learn something about the man that the award was named for.
“I feel that it is important for the award recipients to know something about the person for whom their recognition is named. Dr. Readling exemplified authentic learning for our educational leadership candidates. Since these new leaders have not had an opportunity to learn from him, I feel it is essential that they learn something about him!†said Markert. “Dr. Nash was highly influenced by these three different men. He is very passionate about his subject matter and tells their stories in a poignant and meaningful way.â€ÂÂ
In the book, Dr. Nash reminisces about his professional and personal relationship with the Readlings and how that relationship influenced his own life.
His memories of Dr. Readling focus on not only on their accomplishments as professors at SUNY Oswego, but also the positive impact that Dr. Readling had on his students and Dr. Nash’s son as well.
Beginning with next year’s award presentation, which will be held at the Department of Educational Administration’s Annual Alumni Meeting on May 15, the recipient of the John J. Readling Award will also receive a signed copy of Dr. Nash’s book, Three Good Men.
