OSWEGO – Cuban master percussionist Emilio del Monte will perform with the SUNY Oswego Latin Jazz Ensemble and the Rochester-based Mambo Kings at 7:30 p.m. May 8, in a free concert at Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre.
SUNY Oswego’s arts presentation organization, Artswego, is sponsoring the concert and other activities during del Monte’s May 7 to 10 visit to campus, according to host Eric Schmitz, a music department faculty member, percussionist and director of the Latin Jazz Ensemble.
A year ago, Schmitz and then-senior Nathan Felty, a percussionist majoring in music and Spanish, studied daily with del Monte during a trip to Cuba.
Del Monte studied at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana and has played with many of Cuba’s top jazz and Afro-Cuban groups.
The Mambo Kings, together since 1995, have offered their brand of Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms across Upstate New York and in Baltimore, Dallas, Portland, Vancouver and other cities.
Parking for those attending this event is in Lot 6, in front of Culkin Hall, and Lot 18, the rear half of the lot behind Hart and Funnelle halls.
