SUNY Oswego Metro Center to Present ‘Get Digital’ with Shelly Palmer

SYRACUSE — The SUNY Oswego Metro Center in downtown Syracuse will present “Get Digital: From Average User to Power User in One Day,” with sought-after emerging-media expert Shelly Palmer, on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Palmer invented the underlying technology for Enhanced Television and authored “Television Disrupted,” the seminal book on television’s digital transition. The managing director of Advanced Media Ventures Group, he also hosts “MediaBytes” — a daily show about technology, media and entertainment — and serves as a commentator for CNN.com, the Huffington Post and the Jack Myers Report. Palmer also is president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in New York, producer of the Emmy Awards.

This one-day hands-on course aims to teach participants the digital skills needed to effectively compete in the new digital economy. The event is part of the month-long first-anniversary celebration of the establishment of the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in downtown Syracuse’s Clinton Square.

The program differentiates between digital competence and digital skills. Whether people are interested in workforce development, continuing professional education, honing digital skills or playing catch-up, Palmer’s program is designed to help people become more competitive and productive in the digital economy of the 21st century.

The practical guidelines, ideas and techniques reviewed in the workshop are geared to be immediately applicable on both a personal and business level. Participants will learn how digital-savvy executives are using their computers and will gain an understanding of best-practice digital tools and techniques.

Today, everyone with a computer and a connection to the Internet can create text, graphics, audio and video content and instantly distribute it to a worldwide audience. Through a series of hands-on exercises combined with lectures and demonstrations, participants will learn how consumers are empowered by digital technology, how they are using the medium, and how this technological transition is changing the way people are doing business in the 21st century.

Special attention will be paid to using digital skills to identify and take advantage of new business opportunities.

The program, which costs $299 per person, will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a laptop that is WiFi capable.
