OSWEGO, NY – The term “super hero” took on a new meaning at the Fitzhugh Park Elementary School as a new year commenced.
Principal Donna Simmons brought together a quarter of super heroes recently at a school wide assembly.
She noted, “They represented the PBIS core expectations of respect, responsibility, problem solving and being safe. Each talked about why it is important to have the expectations in school.”
PBIS committee members Garrett Heater and Patrick Bond presented the heroes to the enthusiastic student body.
Heater said, “Our first super hero is made out of thunder and lightning, a shocking, fantastic super-hero who knows how to light up a room and give a good electric shock – this is Sergeant Respect.”
The first hero Randy Bills, then addressed the students and noted, “I always think of others, try to make the right choices, treats everyone fairly and nicely and make other people smile.”
Heater then said, “Our second super hero is the result of a nuclear explosion, sending atomic rays of common sense throughout our school – she glows in the dark and everyone thinks she’s as mature as an eighth grader – this is Miss Responsibility!”
Nicole Anthony, Miss Responsibility, noted, “I am the super hero who is always thinking ahead. I always try to make the right choice, get my work done on time, put 100% effort into everything I do and my teachers trust me.”
In presenting the next hero Heater said, “Our third super hero is a close relative of the Bald Eagle, strong majestic and soaring through the skies, he’s got an eagle’s eye on his own well-being and that of his fellow schoolmates – this is Captain Safety!”
Evyn Haskins, “Captain Safety,” said, “I am the super hero who never gets hurt, tries to make the right choices, does what is safe and smart and follows the classroom rules. I have also never met the school nurse.”
Finally the fourth hero came forward and Heater said, “Our last superhero is petite and feisty, not quite a June Bug, more like a Lady Bug, with her antennae’s searching for solutions to the world’s woes, she’s cute as a button and just as small – this is Lady Problem Solver!”
“Problem Solver” Sara Vincent explained to the students, “I am the super hero who always has a good day, tries to make the right choices, always listens to both sides of the problem, and I try to do what is fair and right.”
