TOWN OF SCRIBA TO CONSIDER ZONING

Informational Meetings Planned for August and September

Scriba, NY – The Town of Scriba announced today the creation of a Zoning Review Commission and the establishment of several public engagement sessions to gauge the public’s sentiments on creating zoning regulations for the Town of Scriba.

Scriba remains one of the last towns in New York State that has not implemented zoning regulations. With the potential growth anticipated by the Micron development, as well as the potential for another nuclear power plant in Scriba, the ability to regulate growth and development within the Town is a paramount concern to town officials.

“Plan or be planned is what everyone is saying,” noted Town Supervisor Kelly Lagoe. “The Town Board wants to hear from our residents what they like and don’t like about the creation of zoning regulations,” Lagoe continued.

In New York State, zoning is a local power, meaning cities, towns, and villages have the authority to regulate land use through zoning laws. These local governments can divide their areas into zoning districts and control the types of buildings, their use, and construction within those districts. This power is granted by state statutes and must be exercised in accordance with a comprehensive plan, which outlines the community’s vision for the future.

The Zoning Review Commission has scheduled a series of meetings to seek public input on the creation of zoning regulations. The meetings are scheduled for Thursday, August 28th and September 18th at 6pm at the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department. A meeting for Scriba Seniors is planned for September 15th at 1pm during the Scriba Seniors regular monthly meeting held at the Municipal Building.

For more information on these meetings please visit the Town’s website at www.scribany.org or call the Supervisor’s office at (315) 343-3019.
