FULTON, NY – While the current school year has just come to a close, the United Way is already planning for the 2011 / 2012 school year. Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Melanie Trexler has announced that the United Way, in collaboration with school districts throughout Oswego County, has officially kicked-off its annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign and is currently collecting school supplies for children in need. “We need to start now to ensure that children less fortunate are ready to begin the school this fall with the supplies they need to succeed,” said Trexler.
Collection boxes have been distributed to a number of stores and businesses throughout Oswego County. Community members will be able to place their donations of school supplies in the boxes from now through Aug.10.
“It’s encouraging to see the reception we have received from businesses and organizations who have volunteered as official collection points for school supplies. Stuff-A-Bus is a great program and I encourage community members to help us make this year’s campaign the best ever,” added Trexler.
Last year’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign involved more than 20 businesses and organizations and served approximately 1,400 Oswego County students. Trexler said that Stuff-A-Bus fills a need that no one agency program is currently addressing. “It’s wonderful campaign that is greatly appreciated by the students, their families and the school districts,” said Trexler.
For this year’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign, the United Way looks to fill eight buses with school supplies for students throughout Oswego County. School supplies will be collected at various locations now through Aug. 10 when the campaign culminates in a final collection day, as the United Way will have buses at eight convenient locations that day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
- Wal-Mart on Route 49 in Central Square
- Wal-Mart on Route 104 in Oswego
- Wal-Mart on Route 3 in Granby
- Kinney Drugs at 3318 Main Street in Mexico
- Kinney Drugs at 3873 Rome Road in Pulaski
- Kinney Drugs at 17 South First Street in Fulton
- The Hannibal Village Market IGA, Route 3 in Hannibal
- Fulton Savings Bank parking lot, Route 57 in Phoenix
In addition to the collection boxes, the Clubhouse Tavern, 126 W. Second St., Oswego, will host a breakfast for the Stuff-A-Bus campaign on July 30 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by Wiltsie Construction and The Clubhouse Tavern, and coordinated by a committee co-chaired by Dan and Liz Dorsey of Eagle Beverage, the breakfast is available free of charge and is open to the public. All donations accepted at the event will benefit to United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus Campaign that helps provides area youth in need with the supplies they need to begin the school year.
