The Professional Journalists and Communicators of Oswego County honored one of their own, when they feted Vince Caravan, on his retirement as publisher of The Valley News.
Caravan was among the group who founded the Oswego County Press Club (now know as the PJC) in October 1972 and has been a member of the club continuously since its earliest days. He began his career with The Valley News 50 years ago and was publisher for 38 years until he submitted his last “Clearing Off the Editor’s Desk” column earlier this year.
Caravan served as Press Club president in the 1980s and over the years has worked on a number of committees, including the popular Public Relations Seminars. He has maintained his membership for nearly four decades and still regularly attends meetings.
Al Squitieri, a columnist with The Valley News, served as master of ceremonies and roasted Caravan with humorous remarks. Caravan’s friends – including PJC members, current and former employees of The Valley News, and community members – shared their memories.
