VOLNEY – With the end of the 2016-17 school year approaching, local story reader Jim McKenna encouraged Volney Elementary students to remember one thing: good books are everywhere.
He emphasized emotion and actions as he read aloud the first chapter of “How to Steal a Dog” by Barbara O’Connor and a couple of short stories to students in grades kindergarten through six.
Students learned that finding solutions to problems are in nearly every book, along with several other life lessons.
His visit to Volney helped promote literacy and a love of reading.
That is something the Fulton City School District has encouraged to help avoid the “summer slide,” which is when students lose academic skills over the summer when school is not in session.
McKenna told all Volney students that the power of words, creativity and imagination are all found in good books. Finding them is easy, he said, and all children have to do is spend time in their local library or book store.
After his 40-minute presentation at each grade level, students asked several questions involving topics such as book stores, book titles, how many books he has read and deeper meanings of books.
