Volney Elementary students truly displayed their love of reading as they celebrated Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
Read Across America is an annual event recognized by the National Education Association that promotes reading for fun.
This year, each Volney student received a free book of their own, compliments of the school’s Parent Group.
Library media specialist Sarah Fay and music teacher Carrie Foster taught a parody of the song “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas to all Volney students.
The entire Volney Elementary sang the song together at an assembly, waiving their free books in the air singing, “This book’s going to be a good book . . . to read!”
Using Tagxedo, an online program, the students took Dr. Seuss character words and formed them into images like fish and hats.
The artwork was displayed along the hallways of the school.
The celebration concluded with a reading night in the library where parents and children enjoyed punch and cookies as they read books together.
“As you can see, everyone at Volney loves to read!” said Fay.
