OSWEGO, NY – Reading is fun, but it is essential that students continue to read throughout the summer months when they are out of school.
This summer the Oswego YMCA bookmobile is traveling regular weekly routes throughout the Oswego City School District providing students with opportunities to select free books they can keep and at the same time encourage continued reading.
This is a major cooperative venture from organizations and businesses throughout Oswego.
Students are bringing books home from the “Driving Books Home” initiative.
Entergy, the Oswego Youth Bureau, Pathfinder Bank, Key Bank, Glider Oil, the Oswego YMCA, Oswego City School District and SUNY Oswego are major sponsors in this effort.
The project commenced after last fall’s “Community Reads” effort that brought internationally acclaimed Greg Mortenson to Oswego.
It was noted that the goal of this program is to encourage youngsters to continue reading over the summer so they don’t lose the skills they learned in school.
The local committee started off the effort by collecting donated books. Hundreds of books were placed in bins throughout the area.
The bookmobile arrived in Oswego in late spring and was outfitted with the donated books.
As the students left school in late June plans were well under way to have the bookmobile travel the local highways throughout the summer months.
Students can visit and simply take a book they would like to read. There is no requirement that the books be returned.
This summer on Monday the bookmobile starts the week at the Scriba Town Park (10-10:45 a.m.) and then moves to the Oswego High School Liberty Street parking lot (11-11:45 a.m.). It is then off to the Fort Ontario Pool (12-12:45 p.m.) and then back to the high school lot to finish the day (1-1:45 p.m.).
The Minetto Elementary School parking lot, directly behind the school near the kindergarten wing is the first stop on Tuesday (10-10:45 a.m.) and then it is off to Hamilton homes in the Duer Street parking lot (11-11:45 a.m.) and to the YMCA on West First Street (12-12:45 p.m.) and finally at Shapiro Park (1-1:45 p.m.).
Wednesday the first stop is the Hilltop Trailer Park on the Middle Road (10-10:45 a.m.), then to Hillcrest Eat Trailer Park (11-11:45 a.m.) on State Route 104 in Scriba. The final two stops are Fitzhugh Park Elementary School (12-12:45 p.m.) and Breitbeck Park (1-1:45 p.m.). Additionally on Friday, July 22 the bookmobile will be at Harborfest at Breitbeck Park.
On Thursday there is a “Read Aloud” presentation at the farmers’ market in downtown Oswego from 4:30-8:30 p.m.
