The Oswego Film Group (OFG) presents a free screening at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 29 of the critically-acclaimed French film, The Class
The Class enfolds during a year within the classroom of a multi-ethnic Parisian high school. François Bégaudeau is a teacher who has articles, sports commentary, and novels published. A novel based on his experiences of 10 years of teaching, Entre les murs, is the basis of this film. In addition to co-writing the film with the director Laurent Cantet, Bégaudeau plays the film’s teacher, François. Unlike other classroom dramas, the stories of The Class’s students (who aren’t professional actors or from the school where Bégaudeau taught) aren’t secondary to the teacher’s story. The film is a mix of scripted situations and improvised dialog. Through the year, the teacher and students are challengedâ€â€sometimes disappointing each other, sometimes inspiring each other–personal scenes that nonetheless translate easily to those found in classrooms anywhere. The Class won the top prize, the Palme d’Or, at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was an Academy Award nominee. The film (rated PG-13) runs 2 hours and 10 minutes.
