OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Opera Theater kicks off the 2011 portion of its 32nd season (2010-2011) with a Post-Valentine’s Day special concert on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, at First United Methodist Church, Oswego, at 2 p.m.
Area singing artists Kristen Lassiter, soprano, and Daniel Williams, tenor, will offer “A Journey Through Love,” featuring songs and arias from opera, musical theatre and art song.
Accompanying is Rebecca Horning, Oswego Opera Company pianist and SUNY Oswego faculty artist.
Tickets are available at the concert, and are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.
The Oswego Opera Theater Board cordially invites all the audience to join them, the artists and other guests for a reception immediately following the concert.
According to Mack Richardson, artistic director of Oswego Opera, the program will include romantic gems from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Schubert; and American and British folk songs “Long Time Ago,” “Greensleeves,” and “Scarborough Fair.”
The second half of the concert features songs from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music and Carousel, Lucy Simon’s The Secret Garden, Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Company, and for good measure “Someone to Watch Over Me” (Gershwin’s Oh Kay!), “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” (Kern’s Show Boat), and “Poor Wandering One” (Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance).
Lassiter has been hailed as “standout” with a “bell like, clear soprano” from her recent performances and has only begun to make her mark in the music community.
She has performed with such companies as Oswego Opera, Opera del West, and Tulsa Light Opera.
Recent roles include Gretel from Hänsel und Gretel, The Governess from The Turn of the Screw, the Fairy
Godmother in Cendrillon, Romilda in Serse, Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, and Monica in The Medium.
Kristen has received multiple accolades including First Place in the Civic Morning Musicals Competition in Syracuse and an Encouragement award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Williams is a graduate of SUNY Oswego with majors in Music and Spanish as well as a minor in Theatre.
He has been in a bevy of productions over the years through both the college and community as well as has sung in numerous choruses, notably Festival Chorus.
Oswego Opera Theatre productions include Dido and Aeneas, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Merry
Widow, La traviata, Carousel, The Fairy Queen, Carmen, “Opera Love Stories” and “An Afternoon with the G-Men.”
Dan teaches piano and voice lessons in the area and is the organist at the United Methodist Church in Minetto and also works at Miss Lisa’s Centre of Dance Artistry through its “Triple Threat” program.
He is an active music director in the area for musical theatre, having worked several public school musicals as well as community theatre productions.
He will be music directing Urinetown: the musical for the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild the month of March.
