OSWEGO – Each year Santa Claus visits the Oswego Children’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. The tree and Civic Plaza are gaily decorated. And children turn out by the dozens for an early chance to share their wish lists with the Jolly Old Elf.

However, one part of the holiday package has been missing.

At Monday night’s Administrative Services Committee meeting Jennifer Losurdo of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau discussed the estimated cost for this year’s event.

The Youth Bureau is working to bring a couple reindeer and a sleigh to Civic Plaza this holiday season.

The cost would be $4,250 plus an estimated $100 for reindeer food.

Dan Roberts of Antler Ridge Farms in Canandaigua, said he’d like to be a part of Oswego’s event.

They would provide two reindeer and a sleigh display for four hours, Losurdo told the councilors.

Visitors will be able to pet them and feed them. They can have their pictures taken with them, she said.

“It’s not sleigh rides,” she pointed out. “But, we will have horse-drawn carriage rides back again this year.”

Among the other items under consideration by the event’s planning committee are a tent for Santa Claus, a walk-in snow globe and more lights for the tree.

The temporary ice rink, in Civic Plaza last year, will not be a part of this year’s event.

Currently, the overall cost of the annual event is $7,272.

Some funding is available in the city’s events budget line.

Other funding will come from a yard sale and sponsorships.

“We always get a ton of sponsorships,” Losurdo said.

The committee forwarded the plan to the full council for consideration.
