FULTON, NY – To grow strong, families need healthy activities and a place where they can play together.
The Fulton Family YMCA offers exactly that and thanks to a $25,000 gift from the Shineman Foundation, it offers more for families than ever before.
A previous grant from the Shineman Foundation helped the Fulton Y hire a part-time family coordinator.
That allowed the Y to offer more programs and events for families.
Some of the most popular include family movie night, the Daddy-Daughter dance, and the annual Healthy Kids Day.
This new Shineman Foundation grant will help cover the costs to increase the family coordinator position to full-time.
That will mean even more programs and events for families, allowing the Y to serve even more families in the near future.
The grant will also help the Y fully implement national Healthy Eating and Physical Activity standards for its camp and school-age childcare programs.
By covering the costs of refrigerators and other food preparation necessities, kids at the Y now get servings of fruits and vegetables instead of snacks high in sugar, salt and fat.
They also eat family-style, and they’re sharing their improved eating habits with their families.
“The kids are loving it!” said associate executive director Tess Kenney. “They are trying new things. They are experimenting.”
The Y is grateful for the continued support from the Shineman Foundation.
With it, the Fulton Family YMCA is delivering on its cause of strengthening community.
The Fulton YMCA is located at 715 W. Broadway.
