MEXICO, NY – Automotive enthusiasts rolled into the expansive grounds of the Mexico Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Sunday, June 12, to show off their polished custom and restored vehicles and raise funds for the organization’s support of veterans of all wars.

Hot rodders and spectators were greeted by plentiful volunteers as they gathered under a large U.S. flag raised on the boom of a fire truck provided by the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department. Proud owners of close to 200 vehicles rubbed and polished every minute detail of their wheeled pieces of art, preparing custom paint and chrome for the exacting eyes of the judges.

The aroma of barbecued chicken and other grilled treats wafted over the grounds, inviting attendees to gather under the pavilion to share stories and rekindle friendships interrupted by the lack of these types of events during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Exhibitor Jay Knight polished the windshield of his 1980 Jeep Honcho, a vehicle that came to him from Montana, making sure that each piece of glass was spotless. Knight also polished up long standing friendships, taking time to reconnect with old friends that share the same passion.

“It’s a combination of old friends and new friends enjoying their vehicles, whatever they are, and it just gives you a great feeling to get out and see people and enjoy the weather,” Knight said.

Organizer and Mexico resident Jeff Beardslee said that his job (along with organizing and promoting the event) was to show an appreciation for all of the volunteers that , through their hard work, made this show happen.

“This is all for the veterans, this is truly what this is all about,” Beardslee said.

Beardslee noted that Mexico’s Edick-Hamlink VFW Post is rated among the top ten posts in the country.

“All of the funds raised by this event will stay local,” Beardslee said.

Co-organizer Fran Moshier agreed, sharing that the funds will be split amongst a number of services to aid veterans and their families.

“It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck to see all of the people turn out for this,” Moshier said. ”Our freedoms are not free.”
