Campaign Announcement: Cannon for NY Assembly 120

Jim Cannon, RN

FULTON – I’m Jim Cannon, and I’m running for New York State Assembly in District 120. My life began in the Adirondacks, raised in a working-class family that knew hardship but never gave up. I lost my father before my first birthday and my mother just before I graduated high school. I worked from the age of 14, paid my own way, and learned early what resilience truly means.

I served our country in the U.S. Army for 12 years, rising from Private First Class to Captain. My service took me across the nation, overseas with NATO forces, and to South America. This is where I learned leadership, responsibility, and the value of working with people from every background.

After a medical discharge, I dedicated my civilian career to caring for others, first as a Hospital Social Worker and for the last 30 + years as an RN. I worked in mental health, corrections, long term care, case management, and co-owned a healthcare consulting business with my wife Debbie, also an RN. Every step of the way, I saw how policy affects real people — families, workers, seniors, and veterans.

I’m running because our district deserves a representative who understands struggle, service, and hard work. Someone who has lived the challenges facing everyday New Yorkers — and who will fight to make government work for them. Someone that can work with the Majority to get things done for us.

I live in Fulton with my wife Debbie and our three very spoiled Lhasa Apsos. I’ve always lived by five simple words: “I will do my best”, and that’s exactly what I’ll do for the people of NY Assembly District 120. Let’s Talk!

  1. Any kids Jim? I don’t know if you can get the whole scope of the struggles that New Yorkers face when you don’t have people that depend on you to provide and survive. Outside of healthcare (which you did), being a teacher, or employed by one of the very few places that pay well in Oswego County (Constellation, Novelis, Hutamaki, etc.) its tough to make a decent income to cover basic expenses. I’m a state employee (with a B.A. & A.A.S degree) and I still have to work a second and third job to purchase things beyond basic necessities. I just don’t know if you’ll get my single insignificant vote because my opinion on the “welfare state” of NY differs vastly. I see how the system is abused daily, and not just by the low income individuals and illegals, but by the wealthy elite. People should be empowered and motivated to improve their lives, not made depended and entitled. I commend your willingness to put yourself out there though, because a change needs to happen.
