COVID-19 Statistics Update, October 6, 2020

OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been four additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since yesterday.

The cumulative reported number is 669 cases across the county and of those, 628 have recovered and four have died.

SUNY Oswego reported no new cases today.

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup briefed the public today in his weekly video posted to YouTube. In this video, he discussed community visitors for salmon fishing.

“We want people to have a good experience while they’re here, but we also want to make sure they’re doing what we can to prevent the spread of the virus,” Weatherup said. “We’ve recently installed billboards at locations around Oswego County and on Interstate 81 reminding visitors that they need to practice social distancing. The billboards are just one piece of our outreach program.”

He said the county has received complaints of visiting anglers not social distancing. Weatherup said the county’s partners – the Department of Environmental Conservation, the County Sheriff’s Department, other area law enforcement and the county health department – are working together to fish safely while preventing the spread of the virus.

At SUNY Oswego, the campus resumed in-person classes yesterday with the approval of the health department. The college is still maintaining restrictions put in place and students and staff continue to be tested on a regular basis.

The county health department continues to communicate with the county’s school districts. Oswego County Health Department Senior Health Educator Diane Oldenburg said it is important for parents to keep their children home if they do not feel well.

“This will be even more important when flu season arrives,” Oldenburg said. “Flu vaccine is recommended for anyone 6 months of age or older. We suggest you arrange to get a flu shot through your primary care provider, community health agency or at a health department clinic.”

Flu shots are available from the county health department Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment only. Call 315-349-3547 to schedule an appointment.

SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

Other updates from the state include:

  • Governor Cuomo has partnered with New Jersey Governor Murphy and Connecticut Governor Lamont to create a joint travel advisory for individuals traveling from states with significant community spread of COVID-19, requiring a quarantine for 14 days when visiting their states.
  • Based on each region’s infection rate, schools across New York State are permitted to open this fall but must have a testing and tracing plan; a COVID Report Card hosted by Department of Health will show COVID-19 positive case data for every school district in the state.
  • Indoor dining in New York City will be allowed to reopen starting September 30 with a 25 percent occupancy but will be subject to strict safety protocols.
  • New York City restaurant patrons who observe violations can report issues by calling 833-208-4160, or by texting ‘VIOLATION’ to 855-904-5036.
