OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been six additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since yesterday.

The cumulative reported number 638 is cases across the county and of those, 575 have recovered and four have died.

SUNY Oswego reported one new case today.

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup briefed the public today in his weekly YouTube video update. In the update, he discussed rental assistance in relation to financial hardships due to COVID-19. He said those in this situation may be eligible for a program through the Oswego County Veterans Services Agency and the County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Applications will be accepted until November 15 or until the funding runs out.

“The short-term rental assistance program can provide up to three months rent for people who have lost their jobs or experience financial hardship as a result of the COVID pandemic,” Weatherup said. “The program is open to all renters in Oswego County who meet income guidelines. Veterans, though, will receive priority.”

More information can be found here.

Weatherup also wanted to recognize the county’s child welfare workers in the Department of Social Services during Child Welfare Workforce Development Month for their work, especially during the pandemic.

Diane Oldenburg, Senior Health Educator for the county health department, gave an update on the recent increase of cases at SUNY Oswego. She said the health department is in contact with the college’s health center every day and meets weekly with college administration to discuss test results, monitor students, and address any other issues that need attention.

The college has made the goal to test 1,000 students each week, along with hundreds of on-campus employees. A few days ago the SUNY chancellor announced strict penalties for students, on-campus and off-campus, across the state who do not adhere to COVID-19 guidelines, beginning October 1.

Oldenburg said the health department also consults with the school districts daily.

“We currently have two districts with positive cases of COVID and we recognize that it may only be a matter of time before the virus affects other schools,” Oldenburg said. “The pre-planning and partnerships established with the school districts have been advantageous for all of us by allowing for a timely response to implement strategies to help contain the virus. The schools continue to be very careful about following the state guidance and monitoring their students’ health.”

Weatherup ended the update by reminding Oswego County residents to complete their 2020 U.S. census. The deadline has been extended to the end of October.

Today’s statistics are below:

Oswego County: (as of 3 p.m.) Note, the total number of positive cases is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

The 7-day rolling average of people in Oswego County testing positive for COVID-19 is 1.3%.
